Installing the Game ---------------------- Windows 95 ---------- There is no need to run install. To start, simply insert the CD into the drive. When the AutoPlay window pops up, click the Play button to play the game, the Demos button to see the Humongous Interactive Catalog, or the Quit button to quit without doing anything. To run the game again, open the My Computer window and double-click on the game icon. The AutoPlay window will appear again. If AutoPlay has been disabled, you can run the game by double- clicking My Computer, then double-clicking the CD-ROM icon, and finally double-clicking AUTOMAZE.EXE. Or, create a shortcut to AUTOMAZE.EXE for a more permanent solution. Windows 3.1 ----------- Before playing the game for the first time, the Install program must be run. We install Microsoft's 32-bit Windows system files, Win32s (version 1.3), and WinG (version 1.0) to the hard disk. These files require only about 3MB of disk space for installation. To install Win32s and WinG, just follow these steps: 1. Insert the game CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. Open the File menu in Program Manager and select Run... 3. Type D:\INSTALL and press Enter (Where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) 4. Click Quick Install, and follow the prompts 5. After installation is complete, click Restart Windows to enable Win32s and WinG II. Removing the Game, Win32s, and WinG --------------------------------------- The game, Win32s, and WinG may all be removed from within the installation program. Because installation of the product is only necessary under Windows 3.1, you should never have to uninstall the game with Windows 95. To remove the game files, just follow these steps: 1. Insert the game CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. Open the File menu in Program Manager and select Run... 3. Type D:\INSTALL and press Enter (Where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) 4. Click the Advanced Options button in the Welcome to Freddi Fish and Luther's Maze Madness dialog box. This will open the Advanced Options dialog box. 5. Click on the Uninstall Options button to open the Uninstall Options dialog box. Click Yes to continue. 6. Check the components (Game, WinG, or Win32s) which you wish to uninstall, then click Continue. The selected components will be removed from the system, as will the icons which they created. The computer may have to be restarted for these changes to take effect. Note: Removing WinG or Win32s will render the system unable to run Humongous Entertainment games, or any other programs which require these libraries. III. Technical Issues --------------------- Many of the problems which you may experience with our games are caused by outdated hardware drivers. To resolve these problems, you may be called on to contact the manufacturer of your hardware device for an updated driver. If you have access to the Internet, check our web site at www.humongous.com for links to these manufacturer's pages. A. Problems Installing ---------------------- Win32s has not been correctly installed --------------------------------------- One of the Win32s system files required by our game may not have been copied correctly during installation, or a file has become corrupt. You will want to run the Microsoft Win32s installer, which is included on our game CD. The file is located in: D:\system\setup\win32s.130\disk1\setup.exe (Where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) Follow the prompts and reboot the machine when asked. You will not need to install FreeCell, although this game will allow you to confirm that Win32s has been installed correctly. In most cases, the game should run correctly after reinstalling Win32s. Your computer does not have enough memory to run the game. ---------------------------------------------------------- To increase the amount of available memory for our game, make sure that all other applications are closed. Some programs that commonly run in the background are virus scanners, nonstandard Windows shells, and third-party screen savers. A low-memory error message can also be caused by a Windows swap file that is not large enough (Windows 3.1). In the 386-Enhanced section of your control panel, try increasing the size of your swap file to at least 4 MB. In some cases, corrupt Win32s files may trigger a low-memory error message. Try completely removing, then reinstalling, the game to replace any corrupt files. A memory error message which refers to Smartdrive can usually be solved by reducing the size of your disk cache. Consult your MS-DOS documentation for information on disabling or reducing the size of your Smartdrive cache. B. Sound Card Issues -------------------- Gravis Ultrasound and UltraSound Max ------------------------------------ Older versions of the Ultrasound drivers will not work correctly with our games. Contact Advanced Gravis for updated drivers. Oak Mozart Sound Cards ---------------------- Older versions of the Mozart drivers will trigger an error message, and close the game. Obtain an updated driver from Oak Technologies, and the game will run correctly. Turtle Beach Monte Carlo ------------------------ If you experience problems with this sound card, make sure it is in standard mode, and not V-synth mode. Consult your sound card documentation for information about changing modes. C. Video Card Issues -------------------- 256-Color Video Drivers ----------------------- A 256-color video driver must be installed for the game to run correctly. A higher color depth (such as 16 or 24-bit color) may result in slower video performance, so if you are running in one of these modes, you may want to switch back to 256 colors. Unhandled Exception Detected ---------------------------- A message which says "Unhandled Exception Detected" usually indicates that the currently installed video driver is not working well with WinG and needs to be updated. Contact the manufacturer of your video card for an updated driver. ATI Mach 64 Video Cards ----------------------- In some cases, you may experience extremely slow frame rates, resulting in choppy video, freezing, or breaks in the sound. Try adding the line "StretchEngine=0" to the [Display] section of your system.ini. In many cases, this will result in dramatically increased video performance. ATI cards may also cause problems because they use a utility to switch screen resolutions on-the-fly, rather than through the Windows Setup icon in the Control Panel. The problem is that the ATI driver actually runs in 24-bit color (16.7 million colors) and just emulates 256-color mode. Programs which use WinG may not recognize the emulation. However, there is a setting on the Flexdesk or WinSwitch screens that will allow you to turn on color depth switching. This will speed up the game because WinG does not have to calculate a 256-color palette from 16.7 million possible colors. D. Other -------- Digital Starions ---------------- When attempting to play the game, you may receive an error message which says "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." The details button shows that a general protection fault occurred in module "Wstream.dll" This problem can be remedied by obtaining an updated driver for the Diamond Telecommander card. Contact Digital for this driver. Microsoft Mouse --------------- Versions of the Microsoft Intellipoint mouse driver before 9.01 conflict with Win32s programs, causing a general protection fault in module pointer.dll. Contact Microsoft for an update, or download the patch from our web site (www.humongous.com). Error messages which make references to Scripts, Costumes, Code Blocks, Actors, Globs, Music Read Failures, Illegal Sounds, or SCUMM --------------------------------------------------------------- In many cases, these types of errors are the result of a disk that has become dirty or damaged. The first and easiest thing to do in this situation is remove the CD-ROM from the drive and examine the shiny side in the light. Quite frequently CDs become fingerprinted--especially by little fingers. If the disk does look fingerprinted, a simple cleaning of the CD-ROM may get the game running. If the disk appears to be scratched, or if cleaning does not solve the problem, contact our Technical Support department. IV.
